LOGLINE
In the micro-chipped near future, a lonely young woman, determined to foster a new friendship, must stop a mind-sync in less than 72 hours before she loses control of her own thoughts.

 

DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT
Sync is a psy-fi (psychological thriller set in a sci-fi world). The themes center around toxic friendships and relationships and question what safeguards we have in place in order to protect the human consciousness from tech advancements that could be taken too far. Told from the female perspective, oftentimes society ignores the warning signs or writes off the poor behavior of others because, for so long, women especially have been told to accept whatever circumstances they may be in. Our antagonist is not a stereotypical psycho-killer, but more haunting, a toxic friend or partner that we may all have in our own lives and who could already have a controlling presence. In an effort to take action aligning with our film's values, we are partnering with a non-profit fiscal sponsor that supports female creatives.The emotional story comes from a very personal place that the director hopes warns others to remove themselves from harmful situations.

 

HOW WE WILL USE THE MONEY
We have created a budget of $50K to cover location fees, equipment rentals, costumes, props, and paying our cast and crew a fair rate. We have estimated the cost of both production and post-production, including things like distribution and marketing and believe we can cover it all with this micro-budget. We have received $20K donations already from friends and family, which means we only need to raise $30K more.

Your donations will go towards the cost of producing and finishing our movie. Your donations allow us to have the equipment that we need and hire the people we need to operate it. Your donations allow us to choose the perfect locations and outfits to tell our story in the most beautiful way. Your donations allow us to treat this non-union project like a union project and pay everyone a fair wage. Your donations allow us to finish our film and get it out there!

 

WHAT WE HOPE TO ACCOMPLISH
The message at hand with Sync is two-fold. First, the relationships outlined in our film, highlight the dangers and lasting effects of abusive relationships. Abusive can mean a lot of things: physical, verbal, mental, or emotional. Toxic and abusive relationships also come in all different shapes and sizes, from romantic to familial to domestic to friendships. Our film centers around emotionally abusive friendships. From our character Hannah's possessiveness of Ayla to her roommate Devin's need to connect and control. The ending of our film is meant to show that even when a toxic relationship is ended, the effects can last forever, much like how you can stop the mind-sync but you can't reverse it.

The other issue we outline is the danger of unregulated tech advancement. In a society where technology is advancing by leaps and bounds daily, are there really enough regulations in place to keep it safe? Are we as humans adapting quickly enough to consider all the repercussions? Are we simple accepting change without questioning the danger? Just because mind syncing is possible in the world of this film, doesn't mean it's a good idea for everyone.

We intend to take Sync to film festivals with the intention of finding a sales agent and/or distributor either for a streaming platform or theatrical release.
